Integral Medicine

Our Process

A three-layer assessment, a five-hurdle map, and a three-month arc — exactly what happens between your first call and your first measurable results.

Most medicine asks what's broken. Integral Medicine asks why the whole system stopped healing. That question changes the assessment, the timeline, and the outcome. We map three layers of your case — physiological, historical, and cognitive/emotional/spiritual — because chronic illness in someone who's been sick for years is rarely one broken part. It's an accumulation: a threshold your Adaptive Capacity crossed after enough cumulative load, built from years of small stressors rather than one large injury. Our process identifies the specific hurdles blocking your recovery, sequences the work so your body isn't fighting five problems at once in the wrong order, and rebuilds capacity month by month. Most clients see meaningful results in as little as three months. This page shows exactly what happens between your first call and that three-month mark.

The Assessment: Three Layers Deep

The most comprehensive intake in medicine looks at three layers most practices never combine. Each one surfaces something the others miss.

Layer One: Physiological & Functional Analysis

Labs, read through a clinical lens most training programs skip: sleep architecture, energy patterns, mood, digestion, temperature regulation, movement and musculoskeletal patterns, exercise tolerance, and your full toxin and infection history. This layer asks what your body is actually doing day to day, not just what one panel says on one morning.

Layer Two: Life History & Medical Timeline

A complete reconstruction of the events that built your current state — illnesses, accidents, surgeries, implants, concussions, infectious exposures, vaccinations. Standard intakes skip this. Your history explains your present in ways a snapshot lab panel cannot.

Layer Three: Cognitive, Emotional & Spiritual Well-Being

Purpose and meaning, sources of motivation, emotional and spiritual patterns, neurotransmitter balance, heart-rate variability. Most systems treat this as optional context. We treat it as a co-equal driver of whether your recovery holds.

Adaptive Capacity is the total ability of your system to adapt to every stressor it meets in a given span of time. Chronic illness marks a threshold crossed — cumulative load exceeding what the system can absorb, built from years of small stressors rather than one dramatic injury.

Tera's Restatement of Wolff's Law: any activity develops the qualities and abilities that activity demands, up to the limit of our ability to adapt to the unique stressors of each activity, and the sum of all activities in a given chronologic period.

The Five Hurdles Framework

Five patterns show up across nearly every complex chronic case. Naming which ones are active in yours is the fastest way to know where the work should start.

Hurdle 1: Nervous System Lock

Your nervous system gets stuck in low-grade threat — wired but tired, unable to fully stand down. Nothing else rebuilds while it's locked there, so this is where we start.

Hurdle 2: Mitochondrial Depletion

The cellular engines that produce your energy run down under toxic load, post-viral damage, or chronic stress hormones. Fatigue that rest doesn't fix is a metabolic state, not a willpower problem.

Hurdle 3: Gut & Microbiome Disruption

Your gut is the largest interface between your body and the outside world, and home to most of your immune system. Disrupted, it reaches everything — mood, clarity, inflammation, nutrient absorption.

Hurdle 4: Hidden Load

Latent viruses, Lyme and co-infections, heavy metals, mold — none of these show on a standard panel, and all of them quietly drain your Adaptive Capacity for years. This is usually the piece a prior workup missed.

Hurdle 5: Meaning & Identity Mismatch

When the life you're rebuilding toward no longer fits who the illness made you, your body registers the mismatch. Recovery holds only when the direction you're moving has real meaning behind it.

The Five Hurdles Framework names the five physiological and psychological patterns — nervous system lock, mitochondrial depletion, gut and microbiome disruption, hidden load, and meaning and identity mismatch — that most often block recovery in complex chronic illness. Identifying which hurdles are active in your case, and the sequence to address them, replaces guesswork with a specific plan.

The Three-Month Arc

Month 1: Clear the Roadblocks

We address digestion, detox pathways, and mindset first, alongside an initial botanical protocol matched to your case, not a generic stack. This is where the loads spending your capacity get cleared, and where most clients feel the first real shift.

Month 2: Target Second-Tier Dysfunction

With first-tier loads cleared, we go after what Month 1 uncovered — infectious and toxic burden, hormonal and metabolic recalibration. The protocol gets refined with precision instead of a shotgun approach.

Month 3: Refinement and Optimization

Energy, cognition, and metabolic power get rebuilt past your prior baseline, with spiritual and cognitive clarity following as your nervous system holds its new pattern. Meaningful results in as little as three months reflects how quickly a system stabilizes when the right obstacles clear in the right sequence — a clinical observation about pace, not a guarantee of outcome.

The Process, Step by Step

  1. Book your free membership call. A short call to confirm fit and answer your specific questions before anything else begins.
  2. Complete the three-layer intake. Physiological labs and functional history, your full medical timeline, and your cognitive, emotional, and spiritual assessment — all before your first protocol is written.
  3. Receive your Adaptive Capacity baseline and Five Hurdles read. You'll see which hurdles are most active in your case and the sequence for addressing them.
  4. Month 1 — Clear the Roadblocks. Digestion, detox, and mindset work begin alongside your first botanical protocol.
  5. Month 2 — Target Second-Tier Dysfunction. Infectious and toxic burden, hormonal and metabolic recalibration, protocol refinement.
  6. Month 3 — Refinement, Optimization, and Review. Energy, cognition, and metabolic power rebuilt past baseline, reviewed against your original Adaptive Capacity baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on the first call?

We talk through your case, confirm this is the right fit, and answer your specific questions in detail. No protocol is prescribed and there's no pressure to commit — the call exists to establish whether Integral Medicine is right for your case. If it's a fit, we schedule your three-layer intake next.

How is this different from functional medicine alone?

Functional medicine typically stops at labs and supplements. Integral Medicine adds two layers most practices skip entirely: your full life history and medical timeline, and your cognitive, emotional, and spiritual well-being, because meaning and nervous-system state measurably affect whether physical protocols hold. The Five Hurdles framework also sequences the work, so you're not handed a stack of interventions to try all at once.

Do you replace my doctor?

No. Integral Medicine adds a system-level layer alongside your existing physicians — coordinating with your current care team where useful, and referring out for anything beyond clinical scope. Most clients keep their primary care doctor and specialists throughout the three-month arc.

Is this available by telehealth?

Yes. The full three-layer assessment and three-month protocol are delivered virtually, nationwide. In-person visits are available at Wellspring Vitality in Hotchkiss, CO, for clients who prefer or need them, but distance isn't a barrier to the work.

What labs are involved?

The specific panel depends on your case and history, but typically includes standard blood work plus targeted testing for infectious, toxic, and hormonal load based on what Layer One and Layer Two surface. We order what your case indicates, not a default panel run on everyone.

How long until I see results?

Most clients experience their first real shift in Month 1, with meaningful results in as little as three months as the Five Hurdles are addressed in sequence. Complex, longstanding cases can take longer — the timeline reflects how much cumulative load needs to clear, not a fixed guarantee.
